How to rank higher in Google Search with the right SEO keyword strategy.
As mentioned in the tutorial, there are several things to keep in mind when researching keywords.
Monthly search volume
Competition
Relevance to your site’s content
Relevance to your site’s categories and topics
In our tutorial, we use Google’s Keyword Planner to identify the best search phrases to use in our website content.
Make sure you find keywords that will boost your site’s relevance to specific search topics and increase your potential exposure to the highest monthly search volume. Don’t pursue highly competitive keywords, especially if they are competitive throughout the U.S. as a whole and not just your local market.
Focus on targeting high intent searches that are most likely done by people ready to buy your product now, rather than general search terms inspired by curiosity. Knowing which keywords to target will boost your visibility online and help you drive more high-quality website traffic.
Without authority, your keyword relevance doesn’t mean much, so finding opportunities to link your website to external sources such as social media, online directories, and media outlets can help Google perceive your website as a reliable source of information.
Another way to do this is through internal linking. This is when you link to different pages throughout your site by using relevant, high-quality keywords as your anchor text. For example, if I wanted DM Digital to be understood by Google as the best digital marketing agency for small businesses, I might take the highest-volume keyword variation of that phrase and use it as my anchor text, like so: best digital marketing company for small businesses.
When Google discovers this internal link on our site and sees the destination (our home page) that those keywords bring users to, it will correlate our website with those specific keywords. This is most effectively done by categorizing your web pages into specific topics, mentioning each topic on your home page (with the highest volume keyword for each), and adding an internal link to a page dedicated to talking about that topic using different variations of high volume keywords.
Internal linking also allows Google to “crawl” your website easily, making it much easier for it to index your different web pages in its search results. In other words, it allows Google to find your content easily so it can understand it and display it in Google Search results.
By targeting high volume keywords and improving your domain authority, you can reach tens of thousands of new users each month and be found by high quality website traffic that is ready to buy your product or service now.
